Micro-sponsorship helps seed fund raising activities

As the 100th anniversary of World War One draws closer, the Friends of Ellington Park, Ramsgate hope to transform their local park into a sea of red leafed and flowering plants to reflect the poppies in Flanders Field. Kent based debbie & andrew’s is delighted to announce this project has won one of its micro-sponsorships.

This award includes £500 in funds, support in publicising the project and free debbie & andrew’s sausages for a celebratory meal for the 40 volunteers who are already signed up to undertake the planting and maintenance of the new flora.

The aim of debbie & andrew’s micro-sponsorship is to provide starter funds to help kick start community projects. The Friends of Ellington Park is using the money to create applications for matching funds from other sources, as well as securing the first round of plant purchasing.

As well as providing a vivid memorial of WW1 in Ellington Park, there is also an oral history project to record the recollections of locals about what the war meant to people in the area. Local schools are invited to join in the planting too – creating a natural science project alongside a living history lesson. “It’s a wonderful project, deeply steeped in history but also very modern in its execution,” commented Ian Bagnall from debbie & andrew’s. “We are delighted to support it and hope to remain involved the whole way through 2014”.

Another part of the Ellington Park project will involve collecting local pictures of Ellington Park from the WW1 era. debbie & andrew’s has also offered to carry some of the stories and illustrations that are collected on its website and these will also be featured in the project’s quarterly newsletter.
